Annette Mertens

Annette grew up watching her mother practicing and teaching Yoga in Germany. After studies and travel throughout Asia as part of her Chinese Studies degree, she came home and met her mother's spiritual teacher, Swami Veda Bharati. She fell in love with all things Indian and studied Hatha Yoga and Meditation in the tradition of the Himalayan Institute  for the next 12 years, visiting centers in Germany, the US, and Rishikesh, India. During this time, she was also passionately involved with North Indian Kathak dance, Belly dance, Qi Gong, and Tai Chi. She spent many months in India doing Yoga, Meditation and Dance.

Living in Berlin in the 80/90ies, Annette trained in Dance and Movement Therapy while completing her MA in Chinese Studies. She earned a Healing Practitioner certification and opened a healing practice working with Shiatsu, Massage, Yoga and Qi Gong.

Since 1996, Annette has been a practitioner in the Buddhist Theravada tradition, sitting extended retreats regularly and being part of the Sangha around her main teacher, Christopher Titmuss. Annette is also a certified Hypnotherapist, NLP Practitioner, and Life Coach with an established practice in Crested Butte where she has lived for the last 6 years. Honoring the lineage of her Buddhist tradition in which teachings are given freely, she offers free meditation instruction from her office.

Annette loves doing Hatha Yoga which includes breathing and relaxation practices. Yoga is 'Mindfulness in Movement' bringing balance into the mind and happiness into the heart. Yoga is also a teaching about living a wholesome life through understanding one's own mind and aligning it with the forces that create life and wellbeing.

My Yoga teaching is centered on achieving deep nourishing contact with body, breath, and mind. This exploration is possible at any level of fitness or age. Learning to respect the limitations and needs of each individual and finding one's own level of performing any Asana is very much encouraged.
